School communities come together in many ways to share culture, build connection and enhance the learning experience. What follows are some of the recent activities across the District.
A Diwali celebration at Alpha Secondary included a Festival of Light display and lunchtime dancing. A club at Cariboo Hill Secondary organized Diwali-themed games and a photo booth. The Parent Advisory Council or PAC at Brantford Elementary planned a school-wide Rangoli activity.
PACs were also instrumental in making movie nights happen – a way for the community to come together for fun and connection. Movie nights were recently held for elementary students and their families at University Highlands, Kitchener, Stoney Creek and Taylor Park Elementary schools.
The PAC at Byrne Creek Community School provided support for the library’s first UNO tournament, in which 40 students competed. Also in the library, students in Japanese classes at Byrne Creek shared culture and food with peers.
The District’s Settlement Workers in Schools or has been holding weekend English language classes for women who are newcomers and refugees from Afghanistan. Held in the Burnaby Public Library, the program is taught by a volunteer instructor and was .
Students from Twelfth Avenue Elementary did a field trip to watch the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. They performed “The Spirit Horse Returns,” which includes perspectives from an Indigenous Knowledge Keeper. In connection with the Vancouver Writer’s Festival, a Deaf author visited elementary students at the BC Provincial School for the Deaf. And Grade 1 students from Brentwood Park did some inter-generational sharing and art with their “Grand Buddies” at a nearby seniors’ residence.
