Students Win in National Music Contest

Two Burnaby Schools classroom ensembles have received national recognition for their music skills. Capitol Hill Elementary has earned third place in their category in the competition and Second Street Community School has received an honourable mention.

Hundreds of teachers and thousands of students from coast to coast submitted entries in after learning, performing, and recording a Canadian song.

Third place (plaque):CAPITOL HILL ELEMENTARY
CATEGORY: JUNIOR INSTRUMENTAL – Grade 6/7 (Division 3) – Performing “Máhsi ts’enįwę” by Leela Gilday. It was scored for guitar, handbells, violin, xylophones, piano, and raven sounds.

Honourable Mention:SECOND STREET COMMUNITY SCHOOL
CATEGORY: TOP NON-LIVE-OFF-THE-FLOOR PERFORMANCE – Grade 6/7 (Division 1) – “Great One” by Jessie Reyez. Students chose the song “Great One” by Jessie Reyez, because of the music video, which focuses on the theme of family.
